I have been on a recent job hunt and discovered something new ( to me obviously). Every employer claims php is becoming legacy, is this true? they keep recommending me to ASP.

With some other ones, they said both technologies were quickly becoming legacy. This is my question to all. what is the industry standard server-side language to learn and one that won't be obsolete in coming years?

The reason i ask this is because in the IT industry, i have been forced to learn many languages because i need to get the jobs but then i find out what i just trained in is legacy.

Most people that interview you have absolutely no qualifications in programming, and every time a new scripting language comes out, they say that the others are legacy, A lot if has to do with the server they are useing, if its a windows server, youll need ASP, if its a linux server youll need PHP/Perl, PHP is not becoming Legacy, nor will it any time soon, It is the only Scripting language up to date that is super easy to interface with database's, It is one of the most flexable languages, and there isnt anything that other SL's can do that it can not.

Yes, i agree PHP is super easy etc, what scares me about php though is, it has duplicated API....i.e you'll find out there is a dll extension that can handle certain api and libraries eg pear that come with it. then you get confused. for example php has over two api's for dealing with .swf movies. which is better is neva documented.

what i've come to notice is that many small scale companies definately rely on microsoft servers so asp is the winning language. i love php but the interviewer said that 'You've got to start microsoft products/programs, they are used by everyone and the are the future'.....

No prob, i see what you mean with php, but if i were you i would have pimp slapped that interviewer, Linux will be around way after windows, its dominates the server market, and is coming up in the desktop market.

as of writing this msg, the poll has shown a 50/50 struggle. that leaves me in a state of confusion, any other members wanna participate here and help me out?

php will stick around. it will probably always be more popular than asp. you can't beat the fact that php is free :)
