I just got done disassembling an 8100 and resetting the bios OK. But now the dang thing has a password for the hard drive!!! Does anyone know how to crack this one? I've removed the drive and tried slaving it on a regular desktop pc but it's still inaccessible. If I just buy a new hard drive, will it work ok?

Here is the only thing i can think of that will help you, you take the tower, yes the black thing with the blinking lights the cd drives and the wires coming out of it that says DELL on the front, throw it in a dumpster 2 towns over, then goto http://www.tigerdirect.com and buy yourself a real computer.

Pete: if you really don't care about the data on the hard drive (i see you're willing to just replace the HD with a new one) then why don't you try formatting it? you could probably do it set as slave. :-/
as for the bios thing, i did a simple google search and found something that might help some: http://labmice.techtarget.com/articles/BIOS_hack.htm the answer can usually be found with some good ol' googling. |

Here's a link w/all the info about the location of the chips you seek and why the hd password can't be cracked. (I have a number of them and am gonna hate to toss 'em!) I wonder if changing the pcb would work.........?

Dell Inspiron 7000 BIOS password
I also have one of those that a well-meaning "helper" password-protected the BIOS on, and now we can't get in... Was anyone able to help you? Appreciate hearing from you on this. Thanks (this notenook uses the 24C164 chip instead of the 24C02 so shorting the terminals won't erase the password, or so I've been told...) |

Starting to think this is not where the password is stored. Instead it may just be the DELL unique number. Any ideas appreciated anyone. |

I have now managed to remove the bios password from the DELL inspiron 7000.
I wanted to post this as it was difficult to find any decent information on this procedure. I hope this is of help to someone. Procedure used (not the only one I believe): The laptop has to be taken completely to pieces. I mean everything as the 24C164 device is on the underside of the main board. It is just above the PLCC bios chip. I removed this device from the board and luckily have access to an IC programmer. The device was filled with FF's which effectively blanks the device. But the next step is more important and is where I went wrong the first time. You have to then clear the CMOS. On the same board is a small PCB mounted cell. Remove the +ve leg and leave for a short while and then reconnect it. Put everything back together and you should be away. It worked for me anyway. |
