Most people that interview you have absolutely no qualifications in programming, and every time a new scripting language comes out, they say that the others are legacy, A lot if has to do with the server they are useing, if its a windows server, youll need ASP, if its a linux server youll need PHP/Perl, PHP is not becoming Legacy, nor will it any time soon, It is the only Scripting language up to date that is super easy to interface with database's, It is one of the most flexable languages, and there isnt anything that other SL's can do that it can not.
